Letter to retailers

I've finally taken some time to put together a letter to send to retailers. Please feel free to use it, change it, add to it, whatever you'd like. My great-grandma used to say "You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar." So I tried to be kind and informative, rather than insisting that they meet my demands. Now go forth and spread the word ye concerned citizens!

Dear [name];

I wanted to let you know that my family has stopped buying any products that are Made in China. We are part of a rapidly spreading movement of conscientious citizens worldwide who have done the same. In fact, almost everyone I talk to these days has begun to limit, if not completely eliminate, the purchase of anything manufactured in China. I know you’re probably thinking “Good luck!” right about now, but it really hasn’t been as hard as you would think. Although, I have had to do less shopping at your store these days.

Many things have led us to the decision not to buy Chinese products. More importantly than the recent lead-based paint related toy recalls or poisoned gluten is China’s blatant and extreme crimes against humanity including forced labor camps, denial of basic rights to factory workers, unfair wages, and let’s not forget the enormous environmental impact either. China’s government reported recently that the rate of birth defects in newborns has risen 40% since 2001 – and they attribute this rise to pollution from their factories.

So you can see where the only socially and environmentally responsible thing we can do is to boycott products that are Made in China. I hope that you will keep these issues in mind when bringing new products into your store. I am confident that this boycott will continue to spread, and I am confident that you will feel its impact as consumers everywhere come to see that they can speak out for human rights, the environment and the health of our children by passing up the Made in China products that line your aisles.

Thank you very much for your time and attention to this important matter.
