My studly and talented husband broke out his drill and some reclaimed wood last weekend to build a fire escape ladder for our basement window. We needed to have one for our home safety inspection for the adoption and our choices at the hardware store were a 2 story hanging ladder - not really helpful to climb out of a basement window well - or to special order one for $100. Since our window well is on the side of the house behind a fence where only a few hairy spiders will ever see it, my stud muffin hubby pulled some old wood out of the garage and made this:
Back off ladies, he's all mine

The finished product.
In all it took about 15 minutes, cost $0.00 and we felt excellent about having no new environmental impact.
