.001 Mile Diet?

We've had some of those little seed starter pots sitting on a windowsill for about 6 weeks, just waiting for one of us to find time to plant some seeds. Well last night I noticed some little sprouts peeking out and asked my hubby what he had planted in there.

The answer? Apple seeds. (If anyone fails to see the humor in this, please read yesterdays post about 100,000 mile apple juice.) I'm sure it was just a coincidence...but still pretty funny.

Awesome on your sprouts! However.. I'm not sure if you know but you can't grow apples trees from seed. Or more percisely you can't grow eating apple trees from seeds. Apples reproduce like we do... with a random genetic mix up. So each seed produces an apple tree totally different from it's parent. You can get crab apples but an actual sweet eating apple is very rare and total random. All apple trees of a specific variety are made by grafting branches from a known good tree on to the root stock of a seeded apple tree. So every "Fuji" apple tree is from a branch of a Fuji going all the way back to the first randomly good apple some lucky crab apple farmer found and called a Fuji. (Apples were originally grown to be turned into hard cider.) (Aren't you glad I'm in the middle of reading "The Botany of Desire" which talks all about this. :) )

Dude. You are totally the smartest person I know. (Is it weird that this is the 2nd time I've felt the need to call you "dude" today?) Anyway...I was looking at Sprout this morning thinking "What the heck? Is this little guy really supposed to turn into a tree? I just don't see that happening" Now I know. Oh well - it was a great learning experience for Fletch. He and Marc ate the apple, talked about the seed, then planted it. I guess that's the most I can hope for! I think he did it more to just plant something rather than growing his own apples (although I have a sneaky suspicion that it was more of an "F you - I'll make my own darn apple juice!" to the 100,000 mile apple juice company).

Why thank you! :) Just good choice in current reading. Btw.. you will get a tree... just not one with edible apples... but if you feel like setting up a family moonshine business :)

Oh dear, Marc will be all over that. ...And it wouldn't be his first attempt either! Mwahahahahaha
