The folks at Eco Canteen recently asked me to review their metal water bottle. Great timing on their part! Mr. Greenhab seems to have taken ownership of both of our SIGG bottles. A few weeks ago he left his in the car overnight and, after freezing, the bottom is now round and it sits/leans kinda funny to one side. Bummer. So now he's commandeered mine too. But he can keep my sloppy seconds, because I have a new water bottle in my life.
The Eco Canteen is made of food grade stainless steel and is non-porous. There's no lining, therefore it is completely BPA Free. It's a wee bit smaller than my SIGG - 26 oz for the adult size and 12 oz for the child size - but it also fits in the cup holders in my car, the stroller and our wagon. (What a "mom" thing to say! Hey, we spend a lot of time at the zoo in the summer. What can I say.) It also comes with a ring and carabiner on the top, so you can clip it onto a backpack, diaper bag or belt.
Best of all, the Eco Canteen is about half the price of the bottles we have. I paid $20 for each of ours (and $15 for the baby version). The Eco Canteen is $9.99 for the large and $8.99 for the small.
So here's the part where I climb up onto my soapbox. I know I've said this all before, so I'll just recap here:
- Most tap water is perfectly safe to drink.
- Plastic water bottles can leach chemicals into your water that are harmful to your body.
- Recycling plastic bottles is an energy intensive process.
- The bottles that do go into recycling (rather than the trash) are often shipped to places like China, where labor and pollution standards are lower.
And now for the giveaway....
Leave me a comment on this post and you'll automatically be entered to win you very own Eco Canteen. I'll draw a name this Sunday evening, so be sure to either check back and see if you won, or make sure I know how to reach you.

i'll be first for ya. :)
OOoOOooh, a draw! And so far I'm the only one to comment!
Heh heh heh :)
I'll go ahead and say I'm the only comment as well.
First!
Ohhh, I'm happy to comment! I've been eyeing stainless steel water bottles for ages, but just haven't made the leap. Like you, I haven't (until now) seen any for less than about $20 each, and the idea of replacing all our reusable plastic seemed expensive. I guess I'll just do it one bottle at a time!
Well isn't it just like Mr. Grrenhab to make Mrs. Greenhab pay for his mistake. That naughty Mr. Greenhab!! Remind him I do have a blackmail photo of him! LMAO!
Hey, enter me enter me! :) You can get on your soapbox anytime you want! ;)
Wow, $10 for 26 ounces is a great price. It's also nice that it's stainless steel. Those aluminum bottles unnerve me.
oooh i would love one that fits in my cup holder. Please enter me in the drawing.
These sound way more affordable than my stainless steel kleen kanteens. I'd love to try one!
I never win anything, but thought I'd give it a shot. Maybe I'll have "the luck of the draw."
Wow - that's a water bottle!
Good job on the review Kellie!
I know I can't win, cause I'm the mom. :)
Mom P.
i'd love to win
It's Frugal Being Green
Sounds like a great product! Where can you purchase them- so everyone else can know after I win the drawing :) xox
It looks great and sounds functional! If I don't win one, where can I find one?
Looks like a cool bottle-is there any metalic taste to the water?
BTW, we have completely given up bottled water due to your soapboxing over the last year or so :)
Leslie~ No metalic taste at all!
EcoCanteens can be purchased at www.ecocanteen.org. They sell the insulated totes there as well.
i would love to win this canteen - really great.
Sign me up! I've been curious about the stainless steel ones, but haven't taken the plunge.
ohhhhh, I'd love to win this! I've been eyeing stainless steel water bottles but haven't been able to make myself part with the money!
I love the metal bottles and am really interested in trying this specific brand.
I just discovered your site this past weekend and am loving it!
I'm very interested in this canteen as I've been reading that my Nalgene bottle isn't as good for me as I once thought. And who wouldn't like to score one for free? :-)
cheers ~

That would be awesome! My husband keeps stealing my Klean Kanteen!
Ooh, ooh, enter me too! ;) I love that they fit into all the cup holders.
My question is: How long before they figure out that stainless steel is really corroding our intestines? Is anything really safe?
But I'll take the eco-canteen if you give it away to me!
Oh what a great giveaway! It is so cool.
That is so generous of you to give it away! Please add us in the drawing and we promise to use it every day.
Eeek! I'm trying to decide what kind of bottles to buy for my family this summer and this would be a good one to "test-drive". :)
What great timing for you! Don't you love it when things work out that way?!
I always drop my one SIGG water bottle - do these dent like my other ones? I'd be thrilled to have one that didn't look like a truck ran over it!
Oh nice! I could use one :) C keeps trying to steal my current bottle at bedtime cause it's easier for her to find in the dark. :)
BUYER BEWARE! EcoCanteen took advantage of my elderly mother on a fixed income. She just wanted to do something nice for her children, so she ordered two by phone. The representative apparently did some fast talking and had her "upgrade" the canteen top to a metal one ballooning the $9.99 canteen into $17.94 each, and "upgrade" to rush shipping which meant that she would "go to the head of the line" (as customer service explained to me) receiving the bottles in 2 weeks instead of 4. Shipping/handling totaled $29.64. To be fair, this S/H includes the 5.95 charge each for the processing and handling of the "FREE" insulated tote! But wait, it gets better - they also threw in a "free" distiller! Come to find out that it is free for 30 days after which time you are charged $279.80. My mother did not realize any of this. You and I might be able to keep up, but at 79 years old, my mother is in tears at the $75 she must now pay for the gifts she thought would cost $20.
EcoCanteen behaved unconscionably. When I called to find out how my Mom got talked into all the extra charges, the representative says "we treat everyone the same". Nice to know.
It's time to make the change, It will save us $10/week easily I do appreciate having a "bottle" with me and stainless light weight will be wonderful. Thanks and hope I can win one.

Nice... I stumbled on this when trying to purchase one. I too have given up bottled water and I'm looking for a way to transport it. I would appreciate a free one also because I have a family and we could always use an extra. Thanking you, and everyone enjoy it and stay green. Peace!
I am looking at sites for this canteen. I want something that is usable, safe, and can go into the dishwasher for my 15 year-old son. I would love to win, because I am currently collecting my (extension) unemployment and applying for jobs daily. Thanks for the review.
I'd give it a try...Shipping is kinda expensive for each item.Hope I Win!!
Pam - I've heard the same thing about this company on many other blogs and sites. I'm always leery of companies that don't let you combine shipping when you buy more than one item - it's an obvious way to make more money while keeping the "low price" low. Sorry for your experience. Buyer Beware indeed!
BUYER BEWARE indeed!!! These items weigh only ounces but you will pay shipping and handling like it was 50 pounds. S&H exceeds the price of the item. You think you're only spending $10 but then its over $30 with S&H. Don't bother customer service. They don't care. This item is okay but NOT worth the cost and aggravation.
If it is the price advertised on the home page for the adult size, $9.99 + $5.95 and the FREE tote + $4.95 Total $21.89 Then what is the problem? Someone has to pay the postal rate and if you want the item(s) bad enough then you pay to get it shipped to you. The company is having to pay for the totes too somewhere in the process.
It is your choice to pay the piper.
Sounds great! I've been looking for something like this.
Now I am sold and i think I'll get one. Seems good for travel too
