Mouse Hunt

It appears that we have mice. We're not dirty people, so that's kind of embarrassing to admit. See, now I'm afraid that none of you will come over for dinner.

I'm trying to get rid of them. I've searched high and low for where they're coming in, but have found nothing. So I've resorted to using those good old fashioned snap traps. Did you know that they're made in the US? I thought that was pretty nifty. I like the fact that you can use them multiple times...if you know what I mean. {blech}

Do you think they're inhumane though?

When we lived in a loft downtown years ago we had mice and tried those glue traps. Yikes. The mice try eating through their own feet to get unstuck. It's pretty sad...and nasty. I can't deal with those.

I looked at the poison bait stuff too, but the thought of a mouse eating it, then going off somewhere in my house to die kinda creeps me out.

Is there a nice way to kill a mouse? (And just for the record, I'd rather not capture and release, since I'm pretty sure they'll just keep coming back in.)

Get a cat? We had some a few years ago and our cat caught all of them one at a time and left them all for us to find. Blech. I think you're probably on the right track as far as trapping them. Sorry.

I was totally going to recommend the Mice Cube (we had mice in the house which freaked me out!). It worked perfectly, we caught 3 little field mice and released them far away from our house. BUT, since you don't want to capture and release, I don't know...

I think poison is a slow death and cruel. I think the glue trap is also a slow death, and like you said, they would chew through their foot to get out.

As long as the snap trap was a quick death (and you want them dead)I would think that would be the fastest and most humane way to kill them.

Good luck!

We had rats last year - even worse than mice imo. They didn't get in the house but were in the attic, under the house, in the garage, bleh. I could hear them running around late at night and it was downright creepy. We called a "humane" animal abatement guy. He basically sealed off all outside entrances but one. That one he put a special outward only exit on so that once the rats got out, they couldn't get back in. The other key is to make sure you eliminate all access to food that they might getting into. For instance, I had a bag of bird seed in the garage that had to go into a rat proof container. Within a week, we were rat free and for a very reasonably fee.

Thanks everyone! I feel bad about killing them. And as Marc reminds me we have a barn on our property that is full of them, so I don't think they're going to stop coming.

Green bean, I'll have to check into what we have for animal abatement in our area. Sealing everything off would be the best solution, but I can't seem to find the point(s) of entry myself.
