Here's her list (also known as "How your Kindergartner can single-handedly destroy the planet?"):
- Colored pencils
- Copy paper – 1 ream (girls only)
- Twistables crayons, 2 pkg of 8 count
- Paper cups, 5 oz. only, 100 count – 3 pkgs
- Facial tissues – 1 large box
- Folders, plastic, pocket on bottom – 2
- Glue, 4 oz (no gel), Elmer’s – 1 bottle
- Glue sticks, white – 8
- Washable markers, 2 pkgs (1-fine tip, 1-regular tip)
- Moist towelettes, antibacterial for hand/face – 3 large containers (not individually wrapped)
- Napkins – 2 pkgs
- Paper plates, 1 pkg (boys only)
- Pencils, #2, 24 ct., 1 pkg.
- Ziploc bags, gallon – 1 box
- Ziploc bags, sandwich size, 1 box
- Scissors- Fiskar- 1 pair
Here's what we ended up with instead:
- Colored pencils - Store brand
- Copy paper – 1 ream (girls only) Already have some at home that we'll send in.
- Twistables crayons, 2 pkg of 8 count - Regular crayons. Unless someone can give me a good reason why to send them, I'm politely refusing. Why wrap a petroleum based product in petroleum based plastic? I think a plain crayon without the plastic shell will do just fine.
- Paper cups, 5 oz. only, 100 count – 3 pkgs. Can I just buy them each little SIGGs? Okay, find, paper cups.
- Facial tissues – 1 large box. We have this on hand since DH had 20+ boxes left over in his classroom last year.
- Folders, plastic, pocket on bottom – 2. 2 paper folders. Do they really need to be plastic?
- Glue, 4 oz (no gel), Elmer’s – 1 bottle Store-brand glue
- Glue sticks, white – 8 Yes
- Washable markers, 2 pkgs (1-fine tip, 1-regular tip) Yes
- Moist towelettes, antibacterial for hand/face – 3 large containers (not individually wrapped) Haven't we decided that antibacterial junk is worse than just sharing the germs? They'll be getting 7th Generation baby wipes.
- Napkins – 2 pkgs Yes, recycled content
- Paper plates, 1 pkg (boys only)
- Pencils, #2, 24 ct., 1 pkg. We're collecting 24 of the bazillion pencils that we have around the house instead.
- Ziploc bags, gallon & sandwich size – 1 box each. I'm still on the fence about these. Can I just send in a bunch of cloth bags?
- Fiskar scissors - 1 pair. I actually found a pair at Target that are made from recycled content!
This was our first school supply experience and I'm still in a bit of shock. I think I'll start stocking up now for next year, purchasing eco-friendly products as I find them for a good price. That way when 1st grade rolls around I can tell Mr. Greenhab that The List is already covered and he'll be none the wiser.
Does anyone else have a hubby who isn't quite with the eco-program? Do you do what you can in other areas? Or sneak things by him when he isn't looking?

Who cares if you get in trouble for it? They put the lists out, and it's up to the parent's discretion to either buy, or not buy, the items on it for whatever reason. IMO, anyway. Every year my middle son's list is full of garbage they don't need and I pick and choose what I buy. Most of the time everything they get is taken away from them and added to a supply closet. I refuse to stock one of those. I've never bought more than one of anything on my kids' school lists for the last 9 years. Unless it's folders or the like, one box of crayons covers my kid, 2 glue sticks, 1 bottle of glue, etc. I'm not responsible for someone else's kids. Last year 2 1 liter bottle of Germ-x was on our lists......I didn't buy those and refuse to supply that to the school. I also send a note to the teachers every year telling them not to hose my sons down with that garbage. My 2 cents.:)
You might want to make sure that that your things aren't taken away from your kids and put in a supply closet before thinking about getting anything expensive that he might not even use.
This is what frosts my socks off. I know my child doesn't use all the things we are told to buy and no left over items ever get sent back to us. All of the things we purchase are thrown into a supply closet. This year we bought the absolute cheapest stuff we could buy since the chances were pretty good that someone else would be using them.
